Windows Server 2022 Reaches End of Mainstream Support in 60 Days — Begin Migration to Windows Server 2025 Now
Scope: Organizations Running Windows Server 2022 (On-Premises and Hosted Environments)
Severity: Medium
Microsoft officially reminded IT administrators on August 17, 2026, that Windows Server 2022 reaches end of mainstream support on October 13, 2026, exactly 60 days from today. After this date, Windows Server 2022 transitions to extended support, meaning it will continue to receive monthly security patches at no additional cost through October 14, 2031, but will no longer receive new features, non-security fixes, or design change requests. While the transition to extended support does not immediately create new vulnerabilities, running on a version with no feature development or non-security fixes increases long-term operational and compliance risk, particularly for government and regulated enterprise environments. Organizations should begin upgrade assessment and deployment testing for Windows Server 2025 immediately, taking advantage of Microsoft's free 180-day trial available through the Microsoft Evaluation Center, and plan to complete migration before the October 13 mainstream end date.
The Uganda National CERT and Coordination Center (CERT.UG/CC) encourages users and administrators to review the recommendations and apply the necessary updates.
